Social Search and Google & Twitter’s Slap Fight.

There are three ways people find stuff in the world:

  1. Discovery via random walk types of events.
  2. A social connection tells them about it.
  3. They search for it.

These are the ways people have always found things. With the advent of first the web, then search and then social we are made finding stuff easier.

  • Social has always had a positive impact on search results with inbound links creating Google juice and increasing site visits.
  • Then a few years ago Google started indexing tweets from Twitter to improve results.
  • Twitter asked Google to stop so it could make money from real-time search.
  • Now Google has launched “Search Plus Your World” which looks at Google+ posts and other social mentions of content to present search results with social proof.
  • The logic is, if you search for something and your friends have already discovered something in that same topic that they felt strongly enough about to share it via a social network it might just be a good result.
  • Google is no longer just a dumb algorithm looking at cached content and inbound links.
  • Bing (Microsoft) is indexing Facebook.

Side note: Prior to this Google was loosing some momentum in search because of link farms and people searing for real-time results via Twitter. This is an existential fight for them.

Bing Overtakes Yahoo as the Number Two Search Engine

Microsoft’s Bing overtook Yahoo in market share in December for the first time, making Bing the number two search engine next to Google, according to comScore.

The researcher found that Bing’s rise that month, to 15.1%, was due mostly to a 0.6% drop in Yahoo’s market share. The rankings come after Bing tied Yahoo in November.
